I think it's the Irish mystique that made Heaney popular in the U.S. MFA programs. When I was in an MFA program and Heaney visited, there was a definite: “Let’s-meet-the-authentic-Irishman” feeling in the air. The same was true with Eavan Boland, except it was “the Irishwoman”. After the absolutely-packed reading — packed with the general reading public and the usual poetry-loving suspects — people were abuzz about his Irish accent.
