Medusa in a Meadow

A moment ago
morning began to spread
its grammar across the meadow
It tames you
and at breakfast it claims you increasingly for its own
with the still wet tips of the blades of grass
And yet the land is sunny
As I watch you from a distance and come close
you are but a diminished bubble
and being so snuggled up to the blades of grass
I perceive you as a medusa
that has spread its unmown tentacles
And like a creature
which I suddenly notice has two powerful front limbs
Using them you open the basket
and take out crisps

Translated from the Croatian by Volga Vukelja-Dawe
