John Forbes

Dean Martin’s

definition of happiness

— for Nigel Roberts

Chris Wallace-Crabbe once told me
that we all become morally coarser
as we get older -
                                        ‘Speak for yourself’
I thought at the time
but that was years & years ago
& now I’ve just read
Dean Martin’s definition of happiness
                              a bottle of whiskey,
                              a blow-job
                              & a million bucks

I’m not sure he wasn’t right.

Dear Nigel,
                                  A poem for you!
                                                                              Yours,
                                                                                                John

This previously uncollected poem is made available courtesy of Nigel Roberts, reproduced as it appeared on the letter to him from John Forbes.
